February newsletter

The recent release of DeepSeek highlights how quickly new AI models now go from breakthrough to broad public availability, yet the real advantage will not come when everyone is using the same model, but when you and your team can access bespoke models built on proprietary data sets.

What if you could unlock data from any machine—a camera, a sensor, even large fleets of enterprise equipment? How might that change your business?

In our work with our partners, we see how efficient ML models, running directly on legacy hardware, can unlock capabilities that would’ve previously been impossible.

This month, we’re highlighting platform updates that give you greater control over your projects in production, as well as updates to the Viam app that enhance your experience as an administrator—as always, we are so excited to drive progress together.

⚙️ Platform highlights

This month, we’re introducing features that give you more control over production deployments, and improve the Viam app experience.

Better ways to deploy and scale

  • Nested fragments
Nested fragments take scalability further by allowing fragments to reference other fragments, making complex machine architectures easier to manage. With this approach, teams can modularize configurations into logical building blocks while maintaining a streamlined parent structure. Learn more.
  • White-labeled authentication & billing
Organizations can now customize authentication flows and invoices sent to end users, ensuring more granular permissions control, and an on-brand experience for end users from login to payment. Learn more.
  • Discovery service: Streamlined hardware configuration
Viam makes it easy to get up and running with many types of hardware—cameras, motors, and sensors of all sorts. With the Discovery service, module authors can implement a Discovery model that sends requests to discover if there is any connected hardware that any of the module's models support.
  • OTA updates for micro-RDK
The new release of micro-rdk (v0.4.0) includes a major feature, OTA (Over The Air) updates. This feature makes it much easier to operate a fleet of microcontrollers or microcontrollers in hard-to-reach places.

Enhanced Viam app experience

  • Improved image annotation
A more powerful image annotation interface means you can make precise bounding box edits, navigate color-coded objects detection labels, and annotate both detections and classifications in a unified interface.
  • Quick machine access with CLI & connection details
The Connect tab now provides step-by-step CLI instructions and a consolidated view of essential machine information, streamlining management and troubleshooting.
  • Real-time error tracking
See live error counts for each resource while configuring your machine. Viam automatically checks for issues from the last 10 minutes, helping you detect and resolve problems faster.

          📚 Top of the stack

To waste less energy, robots need to do less of everything: move less, and think less, and sense less. They need to focus only on what's important at any particular moment.
